16 Migrants Killed In Road Accidents In UP, Bihar
The deaths in road accidents of migrant labourers numbering lakhs returning to their villages from the country’s metropolises show no signs of stopping.

Within a span of a few hours, 16 labourers have died in road accidents in Bihar, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. All of them were going back to their home states in buses and trucks.


Four labourers in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal and three in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba have died.

The deadliest accident took place in Bihar’s Bhagalpur, where a truck and a bus collided. At least nine labourers died in this accident, while several were injured. The labourers were travelling in the truck.

Also, a bus full of labourers had started out for Jharkhand from Maharashtra’s Solapur but it collided with a truck in Yavatmal. While four labourers died in this accident, 15 have been injured.

In Uttar Pradesh, a road accident took place in the Mahoba district on the Jhansi-Mirzapur Highway. Over here, a DCM vehicle carrying migrant labourers overturned, due to which three labourers died. Apart from this, 12 labourers have been injured and they have been admitted to a hospital. There were 17 labourers in the DCM vehicle.

In the past week, at least 34 migrant labourers had died in road accidents in a day. Among them, 24 in UP’s Auraiya, six in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar, two in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna and two were killed on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. 

Meanwhile, thousands of labourers and other passengers are stranded in various places on the Delhi-UP border and they are being made to pay exorbitant bus fares.

According to Pragya, a passenger, she was charged Rs 3,500 to go to UP’s Sultanpur but there are no facilities in the bus. There are no fans and so many mosquitoes that it is difficult to even sit in the bus, she said.
