In a unique gesture, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police is running a campaign to give free education to street children. They say that by connecting children with education, they can be prevented from entering the world of crime.

Almost a year and a half ago, the traffic police set up its first ‘Police Pathshala’ where the street kids are being provided free education along with free food. Now the city traffic police have set up three centres across Ahmedabad, where about 200 children are getting a basic education.

According to the Ahmedabad Traffic Police ACP Akash Patel, the project was started with an aim to bring a change into the lives of these kids, who otherwise get involved in crime or begging if they're left neglected. “Once the children get basic knowledge, they will be enrolled in regular schools,”  he said.

In May this year, the kids enrolled in ‘Police Pathshala’ participated in the module 'Fun with Computers' organised by the Vikram A Sarabhai Community Centre. The module was an effort to help them learn about computers. The ‘pathshala’ also has a library open to all children.

The Ahmedabad police have also appealed to the public on Twitter to come forward to volunteer in order to help these kids.

According to NGO data, over 20 lakh children live on the roads all over India and their number is increasing year after year.
