Allahabad HC Issues Notice To UP Govt On Anti-CAA
Violent clashes erupted at several places in Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) during protests against the Citizenship Law and the National Register of Citizens in the month of December last year.

During the violence, U.P. Police resorted to baton charge on protesters and also arrested several of them.

On Tuesday, taking automatic cognizance of the reports of police violence, deaths and torture published in newspapers, the Allahabad High Court issued a notice to the state’s Yogi government. The court also asked why a judicial inquiry into the matter was not ordered.

The Yogi government has been dealt a huge blow because of the notice issued by the High Court. The court has granted the government one week’s time to file its reply and the next hearing of the case will be held on January 16.

After the Citizenship Law was passed, there were state-wide protests in the month of December, during which violent protests took place in several places. According to U.P. Police, while 19 protesters died in police firing, several protesters were injured as well.

Apart from this, while U.P. Police took more than 5,500 protesters into preventive detention, it arrested more than 1,100 protesters and sent them to jail. During the protests, 288 police personnel were injured, out of which 61 suffered bullet injuries.

Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court has handed over the probe into the violence at Aligarh Muslim University to the Human Rights Commission.
