Assam: African Swine Flu Spreads In 10 Districts,
The north-eastern state of Assam has been severely affected by the African swine flu and 14,456 pigs have died there.

State's Animal Husbandry Minister Atul Bora said that 10 districts are severely affected and every possible effort is being made to prevent the disease.

Bora said that the Assam government is anxious about the state’s farmers. Talks are being held with officials about how farmers can be made to recover from this crisis, he added.

The state government has appealed to farmers to go for the deep burial of dead pigs and to disinfect the pits with bleaching powder, sodium chloride and salt.

The African swine flu made an appearance in Assam in February this year.

Initially, the scope of its contagion was limited to Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Vishwanath districts. However, later it spread to Majuli, Golaghat and Kamrup as well.

According to the state’s Animal Husbandry Department, there are 30 lakh domesticated pigs in Assam.

The Assam government has asked the Central government for help in the prevention of this disease.
