Assam Floods: 24 deaths, Over 1.3 Million Affected

The situation is deteriorating rapidly due to heavy floods in Assam where the death toll has reached 24. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, four new deaths have occurred in Dibrugarh, Barpeta and Goalpara districts. The total number of deluge affected people in the state has reached above 13,16,000 and 25 districts are bearing the brunt of this disaster. 

According to the State Disaster Management Authority, 273 relief camps have been set up across the state so far where the displaced people have been shifted.

Maximum 3,04,841 people in the state have been affected by floods in Barpeta district of lower Assam. On the other hand, 1,95,312 in South Salmara, 1,17,136 in Nalbari, 98,804 in Morigaon, 92, 646 in Goalpara, 90,400 in Dhemaji, 71,000 in Tinsukia and 52,000 people in Dibrugarh due to floods are struggling. The Disaster Management Authority has also informed that more than 11 lakh animals have been affected due to heavy deluge. These include 7,63,764 big animals and 4,07,838 small animals.

At present, more than 2400 villages in 25 districts of the state are flooded and more than 83,000 hectares of fields are submerged in water. Due to continuous rains, the Brahmaputra river and all its tributaries are flowing above the danger mark. A large part of Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park, and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary are swamped with water.
