Bilkis Bano Case: SC Orders Gujarat Govt To Pay Compensation Within Two Weeks
The Supreme Court dealt a fresh blow to the Gujarat government in Bilkis Bano case, with the court declining to review its earlier decision and ordering payment of Rs 50 lakh interim relief, a job and accommodation to Bilkis Bano within the next two weeks. She is a gang-rape victim of 2002 Gujarat riots.
The top court had given the same order in April, but the Gujarat government did not implement the order for five months and sought a review of it, which the court declined on Monday.
Bilkis Bano then filed a contempt petition in the SC. This time, the Gujarat government asked for four weeks’ time to provide compensation, over which Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also rebuked the Gujarat government. "We make it clear that our order was in view of the particular facts and will not be a precedent. Now you pay her the compensation within two weeks. We are giving you two weeks although you may not even need that much time," said the court. Eleven men had raped Bilkis Bano during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Bano was 19 years old and pregnant at the time. Fourteen members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, were murdered by the rioters near Ahmedabad. See the full story here:
