COVID-19 Lockdown: Police Distribute Food Packets
The number of coronavirus patients and the death toll from the viral disease is increasing daily. According to new data, while over 700 patients have been identified, the number of deceased persons has reached 16 in the country.

Amid this, due to the lockdown, there is a crisis of hunger in front of the poor across the country. Several state governments have begun distributing food to them.

In Punjab’s Ludhiana and Jalandhar, the police provided food to daily wagers, who don’t have any work at present.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, the police prepared puri-sabzi and then distributed packets of it among women and children especially. During this, special attention was paid to social distancing.

The Delhi government has made arrangements to provide food free-of-cost in its night shelters, where anyone can go and eat food. The caretaker of a night shelter in Anand Vihar said that 50-60 people are eating food daily over there.

While some people stay on in the night shelters, others leave. People arriving here are also being made aware about the coronavirus.

Due to the lockdown, apart from the poor, a crisis of hunger has arisen for animals who wander around streets and for birds as well. Several people are coming forward to help them as well.

Two sisters, Kajal and Disha, in Maharashtra’s Nagpur, stepped out of their home and fed street dogs. They said that because all the eateries are closed and very few people are leaving their homes, dogs are getting food with difficulty. They said further that it is their responsibility to feed them in these difficult times.

Meanwhile, daily wage earners continue to migrate away from Delhi and other metro cities. On Delhi’s Ring Road, several daily wagers were seen returning to their homes in Uttar Pradesh.

These labourers are more worried about their families than about themselves. They said that although the government has made arrangements for their stay and food, there is no work to do. They also wondered how they will send money home and who will take care of them.

Amid this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a package of Rs 1 lakh 70 crore for the country’s poor. The Finance Ministry said that 80 crore people in the country will be given five kg wheat or rice free-of-cost for the next three months.
