In his address to the nation on Tuesday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic fall-out, a Rs 20 lakh crore package to boost the economy will be announced by the Finance Minister. No specific details about the package were given.

The economic booster also includes earlier announcements made by the Centre in the COVID-19 fight and decisions of the RBI. The 20 Lakh crores is 10% of India's GDP, Modi said.

Regarding lockdown 4.0, he said after recent and ongoing consultations with states “it will be different and have new rules; you will be informed about it before May 18”.

The PM said the coronavirus crisis was unprecedented the world over and India needed to be more self-reliant now than ever. “The virus will be with us for a long time”, he said, adding that people should not let their lives revolve around it.

Regarding the economic package, it will be for MSMEs, labourers, farmers and ‘honest tax payers’ and will have focus on land, labour, liquidity and laws.

The PM also said that India's self-reliance will be based on five pillars -- economy, infrastructure, technology driven system, demography and demand.

With the country’s resources and talent, India had the potential to make the best products and be a key player on the world stage, Modi added.
