Gujarat: Dalit Girl Abducted, Raped And Hanged Fro
There is outrage in Gujarat’s Modasa after a 19-year-old Dalit girl was abducted, gang-raped and killed, and her body hanged from a tree.

The role of the Gujarat Police in this sensational case is being questioned. The Dalit community is alleging that if the police had acted promptly, this incident could have been avoided.

After this crime came to light, people have been protesting in various places and demanding justice for the victim by taking out candlelight marches.

The victim had gone missing on December 31 but Gujarat’s Modasa Police refused to file an FIR on the apprehension that it was a case of a love affair. Later, on January 5, the victim’s body was found hanging from a tree.

CCTV footage from this incident has also gone viral, in which four boys can be seen abducting the Dalit girl and forcing her to get into a jeep.

Enraged at seeing the victim’s body hanging from the tree and angry with the behaviour of the police, people not only surrounded the local police station but also refused to accept the victim’s dead body.

After mounting pressure, Gujarat Police have filed cases against four persons -- Bimal Bharwad, Darshan Bharwad, Satish Bharwad and Jigar -- under sections related to abduction, gang rape and murder.

According to her family members, the victim was gang-raped after abduction and later, to pass off her death as suicide, her body was hanged from a tree.

Gujarat is among those states in the country where heinous crimes like rapes are increasing very swiftly. According to National Crime Records Bureau statistics, in the year 2018, there was a 16% increase in cases of rape in Gujarat, while nationwide this increase was 2.4%.

In 2017, 477 cases of rape were registered in Gujarat, but in 2018, there was a 16% jump in this figure and it reached 553.

Similarly, there has been a 28% increase in cases of sexual exploitation of children in Gujarat. In 2017, this figure was 1,671 which increased to become 2,127 in 2018.
