Japanese PM Shinzo Abe Likely To Cancel India Tour
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's trip to India next week has been postponed in view of the violence that has flared up against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the north-eastern states.

"Both sides have decided to defer the visit to a mutually convenient date in the near future," foreign ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Earlier, media reports suggested that Abe is considering cancelling his trip to India. Abe was supposed to reach India on Sunday and a summit was to be held between him and PM Modi in Guwahati from December 15 to 17.

Reacting on reports that Japan PM may cancel India visit amid Assam protests over Citizenship Act, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had said, "It will be a blot on our country".

On Thursday, Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and the country's Home Minister called off their visits to India in the midst of the agitations in the northeast.

The situation is very tense in 10 districts of Assam due to protests against CAB. In Guwahati, protesters took to the streets after violating the curfew several times and police had to resort to firing to disperse them. Apart from this, tear gas and rubber bullets were also fired at protesters.

Meanwhile, protesters also caused widespread destruction at the spot where the summit between Modi and Abe was to be held.

According to news agency PTI, the current situation in Guwahati is very tense. A large number of protesters have gathered at the Chandmari area of Guwahati on an appeal by the All Assam Students’ Union, in protest against the Citizenship Act.
