About 80 Congress workers were arrested and party leaders like Jitin Prasada and Kaushal Mishra were put under house arrest by the UP police ahead of a ‘Nyay Yatra’ in support of the jailed law student who accused BJP leader and former Union minister Chinmayanand of rape, and was later arrested in an extortion case.

Congress’s UP unit had scheduled a padayatra from Shahjahanpur to Lucknow to highlight the treatment meted out to the student. Police authorities said no one would be taking out any rallies.

“UP is no Kashmir yet today I am in preventive custody for simply wanting to highlight the plight of the Shahjahnpur rape victim. This BJP govt has no qualms in quashing an individual’s fundamental rights,” tweeted Jitin Prasada soon after he was taken into custody.

All-India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev was also stopped from entering Shahjahanpur.

Hitting out at the UP BJP government, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi said the criminals in UP have the protection of the government so they can intimidate the rape victim. "The UP BJP government wants to suppress the voice seeking justice for daughter of Shahjahanpur. The padyatra is being stopped. Our workers and leaders are being arrested. What is there to be afraid of?" she tweeted.
