Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has congratulated Indian-origin economist Abhijit Banerjee for winning the Nobel Prize.

In a letter, Dr Singh said that it is a matter of joy and pride for him that once more, an Indian has been given this prestigious award for Economics.


Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has congratulated Indian-origin economist Abhijit Banerjee and his wife Esther Duflo for winning the Economics Nobel Prize.

In a letter to Abhijit Banerjee, Dr Singh said that it is a matter of joy and pride for him that after his friend and Professor Amartya Sen, Banerjee is the second Indian who has been given the Nobel Prize for Economics.

Dr Singh also said that he is happy about the fact that Abhijit Banerjee’s wife Esther Duflo has been selected to share the Nobel Prize with him. He wrote that you have done good work in poverty alleviation and development economics on a global scale.

The former Prime Minister said that he is very happy as a student of economics that the Nobel Prize committee chose a person working in the field of development economics for the award. This is very useful in formulating policies in developing countries like India.

Meanwhile, after winning the Nobel Prize, Abhijit Banerjee said that the Indian economy is in a wobbly state.
