Saddled With ₹2.56 Lakh Crore Debt, MP To Build ₹2000 Cr. Shankaracharya Statue
The Madhya Pradesh government, laden with a debt of ₹2.5 lakh crore, has approved the construction of a statue at the cost of ₹2,000 crore. The 11 feet statue of Adi Shankracharya will be accompanied by an ‘international museum’ which is slated to be finished by 2023, in time for Assembly elections in the state.
On this costly decision, the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan last week had met and consulted with the ‘Nyasi’ board of the Acharya Sanskriti Ekta Nyas in which many Hindu religious figures participated. Emphasizing the “holiness” of the project, CM Chouhan said that the International Shankaracharya museum in Omkareshwar and the International Vedanta Institute will connect the State to the world.
Dubbed as “The Statue Of Oneness”, it will be placed in a 54-feet pedestal in an area of 7.5 hectares atop Mt. Gurla Mandhata mountain in the state. On the other side of the Narmada river, a 5 hectare area will be demarcated for the development of a gurukul and the Acharya Shankar International Advaita Vedanta Institute will be established on an area of 10 hectares. However, opposition party Congress said that this should not be taken seriously, pointing to the immense debt upon the state and said that h will comment upon the matter when the budget is allocated for the project. According to media reports, the announcement for this project comes even as the debt burden on the state is higher than its average budget of ₹2.4 lakh crore, whereas the debt n it is ₹2.56 lakh crore. This means that the debt burden on every citizen of the state comes to ₹34,000. The Congress has demanded a white paper on the rising debt burden of the state. According to a report by Free Press Journal, the BJ government under Shivraj Singh Chouhan has borrowed ₹52,286 crore during the financial year 2020-21, which is double of that borrowed by the Kamal Nath government in 2019-20, which was ₹23,430. The Congress alleges that even after being under such crushing debt, the state government is borrowing more than ₹49,000 crore, on which is it paying an interest of ₹21,000 crore. This comes even as the opposition is alleging that the people of state are facing rising prices, falling incomes, and unemployment.
