As many as 120 prisoners have been found infected with coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi district jail. The prison barracks have been converted into a COVID-19 facility after such a large number of prisoners found infected with the novel coronavirus. All 120 prisoners did not show signs of the virus.

On Wednesday, two inmates showed symptoms of coronavirus after which they were tested positive. Both prisoners were sent to the Institution quarantine. After this, Jhansi district administration ordered 800 rapid antigen kits and got the prisoners investigated, of which 120 prisoners tested positive.

Jhansi DM Andhra Vamsi said that four barracks of the jail have been converted into Corona Hospital and all 120 prisoners are admitted there. DM claims that three teams of doctors are monitoring these patients for 24 hours and are equipped with all necessary facilities. If needed, the prisoners will be shifted to Jhansi Medical College.

Investigations so far have revealed that on July 9, a prisoner Shripat was admitted to Jhansi Medical College, which was hit by COVID-19 on 11 July. This prisoner was also sent to the institutional quarantine for 14 days. It is believed that some jail staff came in contact with the prisoner, due to which the infection has spread to the remaining inmates.

Statistics show that the situation in Uttar Pradesh jails is deteriorating every day. So far, inmates of Gautam Budh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Agra, Lucknow, Mau, Ballia and Sonbhadra have been prisoners of Corona. Uttar Pradesh is one of the states where most of the jails are overcrowded and the state government has not taken any concrete steps to reduce their number to contain the infection.
