Sonia, Manmohan Meet Chidambaram In Tihar Jail

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh drove down to Tihar jail on Monday morning to meet former Finance Minister P Chidambaram ahead of his bail plea hearing by Delhi High Court in INX Media case. Chidambaram's son, Karti too visited him in jail today.

Jail officers said the conversation between them went on for about half an hour. After the meeting, Chidambaram's family put out a tweet from his handle on his behalf saying: "I have asked my family to tweet on my behalf the following -- I am honoured that Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh called on me today. As long as the @INCIndia party is strong and brave, I will also be strong and brave."

Chidambaram is being investigated by both the CBI and the ED in money laundering cases related to INX media. He was arrested by the CBI on August 21, following which a bail application was filed by his lawyers before the Delhi High Court. 

The CBI, however, has opposed his bail on the grounds that it will be "against the zero-tolerance policy on corruption". The matter will be heard in the court today.

Last week, senior political leaders Ahmed Patel and Ghulam Nabi Azad visited him in jail.
