Surat: Daily Wagers Go On Rampage Fearing Lockdown Extension
The labourers are demanding that they should be allowed to go home. Gujarat’s Surat is considered to be the stronghold of the textile industry. Over here, thousands of labourers from UP, Bihar and several other states are employed on a large scale. They are scared about how they will satiate their hunger if the lockdown is extended because all factories are closed for the time being. The labourers cannot even go back to their homes because the borders of all cities and states have been sealed due to the lockdown. Apart from this, all means of transport are also non-functional. Daily wage labourers have borne the brunt of the sudden nationwide lockdown imposed on March 24. Lakhs of labourers have been forced to leave cities like Delhi and Mumbai and go to their villages hundreds of kilometres away. Several labourers have even died during this exodus. The Central and state governments are claiming that rice, wheat, pulses etc will be made available to the poor during the lockdown but this facility is proving to be insufficient. Several state governments are not in favour of lifting the lockdown amid increasing cases of the coronavirus in the country. However, there is a risk of the condition of crores of labourers worsening further with an extension of the lockdown.
