UN Slams India Over Citizenship Amendment Act, Cal
The United Nations (UN) has expressed its deep concern over the use of excessive police force to deal with people protesting against the disputed Citizenship Act. The UN has appealed to the government to respect people’s freedom of expression and the right to protest.

Speaking to reporters, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres is concerned about the violent protests in India against the Citizenship Act and the use of excessive police force to stop them.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also released a statement and called the new Citizenship Act fundamentally-biased. She said that due to this law, the strength of the equality of citizens enshrined in the Indian Constitution is being undermined.

Meanwhile, according to UN statistics, the problem of refugees is not as serious as it is being portrayed. According to these figures, there were 1,95,891 refugees in India till the end of 2018 and around 12,000 people were asking for asylum in the country.
