Vijay Diwas: Marking India's Victory Over Pakistan
In the year 1971, December 16 had turned into a historic day. After the victory of India over Pakistan on December 16, 1971, this day is celebrated as Vijay Diwas.

Today, i.e. December 16, it has been 48 years since the end of the third War between India and Pakistan. The Battle of Longewala, fought during this War, is still remembered. This 13-day War ended with the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers.


India had defeated Pakistan soundly in the 1971 War, after which East Pakistan had been liberated; it is now known as Bangladesh. This War proved historic for India. In Bangladesh, December 16 is celebrated as Victory Day.

Nearly 90,000 soldiers of the Pakistan Army had been taken prisoner during this War. Around 30 lakh people had been killed in this War, while around 1 crore people had taken shelter in India.
