Social media platforms have taken the country by storm, and a new report by Axis My India, a market intelligence firm, says that Whatsapp, followed by Facebook and YouTube, are the most frequented apps in India. The findings are based on its monthly India Consumer Sentiment Index (CSI).

A combined 58% of people used websites, apps, and social media for getting latest news updates while 53% got that from TV and news channels. The study also found that media engagement increased by 25% in families in the three months until January 2022.

Meta’s WhatsApp And Facebook Most Frequented Apps

The report says that Whatsapp is the most frequented app by 31% users, followed by Facebook (26%), and YouTube (21%). These 3 apps are all owned by American corporations and between them, represent the most popular segments of the digital space: social media, video sharing, and personal messaging.

According to multiple marketing research sources, WhatsaApp is the  most-used messaging app in the world with 2 billion active users worldwide, and India has the single-largest user base of WhatsApp at around 390-400 million, followed by Brazil at more than 108 million. It launched its UPI- enabled digital payments feature in 2018 as a trial, and then expanded it to more users in November 2020.

Due to its widespread prevalence, WhatsApp has also been under the glare for provoking lynchings, and enabling rumours and fake news to spread in India. There are at least 13 lynching incidents on record that were caused by rumours spread on WhatsApp, and this led to the platform tweaking its features to slow the spread of rapid messages.

Similarly, India tops the list of the most number of active users on Facebook worldwide with 340 million users, and India has the most users of YouTube anywhere in the world as well, with over 225 million.

Given the vast population of the country, even these numbers are bound to grow in the near future, making India an important global market in the digital economy. The country’s enthusiasm for mobile games, and apps can be seen in this GoNews report which shows that Indians spend over 4 hours on mobile phones every day, and the are the second-most downloaders of apps and games after China.

How Indian Apps Compare

India’s domestic social media apps such as the microblogging app Koo and video-sharing platform Mauj App, among others, d not have such a heft in the domestic market yet. While Koo has been downloaded by 15 million people, Moj has crossed 100 million users after the ban on TikTok was imposed by the government in June 2020. Its parent platform ShareChat has 250 million users and is available in English and 15 Indian languages. Most of the Indian Apps are available on Android only
