Do women politicians in India face constant humiliation, threats, and misbehaviour on Twitter? To find out the answer to this question, Amnesty International conducted a research on tweets sent to 95 women politicians in India

The report titled ‘Troll Patrol India: Exposing Online Abuse Faced by Women Politicians in India’, reveals that women politicians are targeted with abuse online for gender, religion, caste, marital status, and other personal matters.

Research also shows that if a woman politician is Muslim, she has to face more abuse – up to 91.4% more - than women politicians from other religions.

This report says that Indian women politicians had to face everything from rape threats to abuse and misogynistic taunts on Twitter. It also says that these women had to deal with thousands of humiliating tweets on a daily basis. Among these, more than 13% of tweets were offensive.

The report also mentions that most of the women politicians who were trolled did not belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Also, women leaders in India have to face around double the amount of trolling than their counterparts in the United States and Britain.

This research was conducted during the Lok Sabha elections between March and May 2019.
