Football great and Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi, bags the best men’s player at the Best FIFA awards at the La Scala Opera house in Milan as Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Van Djik missed out on the top prize. 


Real Madrid great and current Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award five times.

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk who won the European best player award for his stellar performance last season missed out on this one.

It is the sixth time Messi has been voted the world's best, after wins in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

The 32-year-old Argentine helped Barcelona clinch the La Liga title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp was voted men's coach of the year who won the Reds the prestigious UCL trophy while U.S. national team coach Jill Ellis took home the best women's coach trophy.

The best player is voted for by international coaches and captains, as well as members of the media.
