Napoli Stuns Liverpool In The Champions League

Champions League holder Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool men were handed a shocking defeat by Carlo Ancelloti’s Napoli. The scoreboard after a rigorous 90 minutes and extra time was 2-0.

Dries Mertens' penalty and Fernando Llorente's late goal following a sloppy Virgil van Dijk error consigned the Reds to a fourth successive defeat on the road in the Champions League group stages.

Sadio Mane and Mo Salah troubled Napoli’s defence with their pace but the Senegalese forward missed a great chance to draw first blood for the reds. Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian brilliantly denied Mertens a goal in the first half from opening the goal-scoring account for Napoli.

Liverpool started the match on a high note and displayed their fine form of Premier League but defending the crown is not easy; only one club in the competition's history has successfully retained its Champions League title, Real Madrid on two occasions.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti will have been delighted with the intensity shown by his side on a tough night in Naples.

Defeat means Liverpool set the unwanted record of being the first defending champion to lose its first Champions League match the following season since AC Milan in 1994.
