Pulling a coup of sorts, former India captain Saurav Ganguly has emerged out of nowhere as consensus candidate for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s presidency.

If Ganguly, who is currently the president of Cricket Association of Bengal, officially confirms the unanimous decision, he will become the first former Indian captain to be BCCI's President in BCCI's 91-year history.

The 47-year-old will have to demit his post in September 2020 to undergo a compulsory cooling off period.

While Ganguly is set to take over as president, Karnataka’s Brijesh Patel, the former Indian batsman backed by former BCCI president N. Srinivasan, had to be content with being the IPL chairman.

Also emerging unopposed were Jay Shah, son of Home Minister Amit Shah, as the next secretary and Arun Singh Dhumal, brother of Union Minister Anurag Thakur, as new treasurer. Kerala Cricket Association’s Jayesh George is likely to be the joint secretary.

The announcement invited reactions from fans on Twitter, remembering the golden days of Indian cricket:
