Virtual Sports Tournaments - A Hit - As Profession

A nine-week sim racing competition is being launched by the All-electric racing series Formula 1 after having to put its sixth season on hold due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The series joins the likes of NASCAR, Formula One, and IndyCar, all of which are already inclined towards the robust software and community of online sim racing to keep fans and drivers amused and occupied in the absence of real-world racing.

Funds raised from the digital competition will be directed towards UNICEF to provide gears for health workers and also to help children in the pandemic.

On the other hand, virtual reality is also keeping Premier League players razor-sharp during lockdown.

Manchester-based firm Rezzil describes how famous football players have made use of their headsets to 'transport players back onto the pitch'

“You can do a 10-20 minute test where you are put under tasks of increasing difficulty and coaches are looking at certain skills they can monitor – scanning capability, receiving passes under pressure, how long it takes to make decisions with a ball at your feet, how one-footed you are, repetition of mistakes” says sports director and co-founder Andy Etches.

Pro Basketball players are also playing basketball virtually through the “HORSE Challenge” initiated by ESPN.  HORSE is a simple household basketball game.

Eight current and former NBA and WNBA players will be competing in ESPN’s virtual “HORSE Challenge.”They will all be live streaming from the safety of their own courts, and ESPN will broadcast the feeds on its network.

Golf is not left behind either. Scottish golfers are holding virtual tournaments that allow them to play rounds from their houses.

Bellshill Golf Club is running the simulated competitions. To play, participants enter their handicap on a website and the results of the round are randomly calculated. The handicap is then subtracted and a winner is named.

Players are taking the route of virtual reality tournaments to give them an edge, which, at the moment, appears a wise move as it will help them maintain high levels of mental fitness amid lockdown blues.
