Watch: Digital Avatars Of IIT Bombay Students Attend Virtual Convocation Amid Pandemic
In a historic first in its 62-year history, IIT Bombay held its 58th convocation in “virtual reality mode” on Sunday.
The digital avatars of the graduating students who couldn’t attend the convocation physically due to COVID-19 were present during the ceremony; where Nobel prize winner Professor Duncan Haldane was invited as the chief guest.
“There is a lesson for everyone involved in research,” said the Nobel Laureate Prof. D Haldane to graduating students during the virtual ceremony. A video shows the digital avatar of a student receiving “President of India’s Medal for 2020”. “You will be experiencing personally created avatars of each one of you collecting degree certificates from my own avatar surrogating me, from the comfort of your homes. This is probably the first such attempt anywhere in the world,” said the IIT Bombay Director to graduating students.
