The BJP government in Assam has decided to shut down government-funded madrassas and 100 Sanskrit schools across the state. Assam's Finance and Education Minister Hemanta Biswa Sharma said that all madrassas run by the state government will be converted into schools and in some cases, teachers will be shifted to government schools. Sharma said the Assam government will not give money to any institution which gives priority to only one particular religion.
