Congress CWC Meeting: Sonia Gandhi Asserts Herself As Party Leader

The Congress' highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC), held a meeting today under the presidency of Sonia Gandhi, who has said that she is still a "full time President" of the party. The agenda of the meeting was to disucuss: 

  • Organisational polls (intra-party elections) 
  • Next Congress party president
  • Strategy for upcoming assembly polls
  • Introspection on failures in recent elections
  • G-23 critics' demands

The Lakhimpur Kheri incident of mowing down farmers and resultant deaths in the violence also featured high on the meeting's priority. 

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said that there is no need for leaders to talk to her "through the media" and should instead contact her directly. She took on the issue of defections, electoral losses, and took aim at various steps of the Modi government. This included conducting foreign policy on lines of domestic political inmperatives, attacking federalism, and the Modi government's urgency in "asset monetization", and disinvestment which she said reveals a single-minded focus on "Becho, Becho, Becho".
