Even as India becomes the seventh worst affected COVID-19 country in the world, top ministers maintain that its impact is still quite low. GoNews' Editor-in-chief Pankaj Pachauri takes a look at exactly how and where the virus entered India and the subsequent countermeasures which will now have repercussions on the Indian economy for many years to come. Was it also possible that early intervention from the government could have reduced the damage?

More than 190,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported across the country. Of these, more than 91,000 people have recovered and 5,339 people have died. The biggest question is that despite the strict lockdown, how did the virus spread on such a large scale in the country?

The Government, on the other hand, says there are fewer cases in India as compared to other nations, given its population. Figures show that from January 18 to March 24, about 15.5 lakh people came to India from abroad.

Statistics show that 10.56 crore foreign tourists visited India in the year 2018. Around 6.87 crore NRIs visit India every year.

The coronavirus spread from China to the whole world. Whereas in the year 2018, 2.67 percent people from China came to India while the maximum 21.37 percent people came from Bangladesh to India. Similarly, 13.80 percent of people from the US and 9.75 percent of people from Britain flew to India.

According to the report, 798,230,000 people travel by air in the US and the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world has been reported in the US.

In Brazil, 102,039,359 people travel by air and there are more than half a million cases of coronavirus.

Russia ranks third in terms of cases and 76,846,126 people travel by air.

Similarly, in India, seventh in the global list of coronavirus worst-affected countries and 98,927,860 people travel by air every year. These figures are very low in terms of population and indicate clearly that the government has failed to prevent corona infection in the country.
