The ruling Yogi Adityanath government Uttar Pradesh claims to have brought down the crim rates in the state but the facts say that incidents of crimes against Schedules Castes (many of whom self-identify as Dalits) are increasing at breakneck speed, and rapes of Dalit women have increased by 43% over the past 8 years.

The maximum crimes against Scheduled Castes (Dalits) occur in Uttar Pradesh, as per an analysis of data released by the National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB) over the past eight years.

The NCRB has not provided a state-wise list of crimes against Scheduled Caste communities for 2020. If we look at the figures from 2013 to 2019, the incidents of crimes against Dalits increased by 8%, and Uttar Pradesh has maintained its top spot in crimes against the community. Nationwide, 18% of all crimes were registered against Dalits in 2013 which jumped to nearly 26% in 2019.

Dalit community. Calculations based on the NCRB data show that crimes agsinst Scheduled Castes have increased by 14% over 8 years.

The crime of rape against Dalit women have increased significantly, up by almost 435 over 8 years. There were 391 cases of rapes of Dalit women in 2013 which increased to 604 in 2020.
