Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has drawn flak after saying that the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be a "fight between 80% and 20%". He made these comments while interactig with media during a conclave organized by Dordarshan (DD) yesterday.

While he elaborated that the 80 vs 20 means those in favour of development and governance against those suppoting criminals and mafias, the implicit message is that it is a Hindu vs Muslim issue and the respective communities are being referred to in terms of their share in the population.

He is being accused of attempting to polarize society by making an 'us vs. them' statement, leaving no middle ground for a considered or nuancedinterpretation of voters' choices. He also said that suporting him, Narendra modi, and the BJP is equivalent to being pro-India and pro-Hindu and their oponents are likewise 'against' the country and Hinduism
