Kamal Hasan (b.1954) is a veteran actor who turned to the political arena over the past few years. He has primarily acted in Tamil cinema, with appearances in Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali and Hindi films as well. He has played many roles off-screen, from being a director, music composer, lyricist, singer, and choreographer. He began his cinematic career with the Tamil film Kalathur Kannamma (1960) as a child actor, and received a President’s Gold medal award for the same. He has since worked in over 200 films.
