A study by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) has said in a report that air pollution is reducing the life expectancy of Indians living in the country’s most polluted regions. It has been stated that effective policies against air pollution can increase the national average life expectancy by two years. India is among the most polluted countries in the world, with increased electrification and cheap coal driving the booming energy demand.

"Achieving these goals would have a major impact on the life expectancy levels of Indians - it would increase the national life expectancy level by nearly two years, and three-and-a-half years for residents of Delhi”
