Army Helicopter Crash: Bodies Of General Bipin Rawat, 12 Others To Be Brought To Delhi Today

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced in parliament today that the mortal remains of the 13 people aboard the IAF Mi 17V5 chopper that crashed in the hilly areas of Tamil Nadu near Coonoor will be brought to Delhi and be accorded due military honours. The country’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) who headed all three armed forces, General Bipin Rawat, also lost his life in the accident along with his wife, Madhulika Rawat, and 11 others.

The only survivor of the accident is Group Captain Varun Singh who is presently on life support and is being treated for severe burn injuries.

General Rawat was slated to deliver an address in Staff College, Wellington and the chopper had taken off from Sulur Air Base at around 11.48 AM, while contactwith ground staff was lost around 12.08 PM Initial reports are saiying tht poor visibility due to fog could hae caused the accident. Some other media reports are also claiming that the ‘black box’  of the helicopter has also been found which can aid the investigation into the crash.
