Barefoot College In Tilonia, Rajasthan: 50 Years Of Community Building And Grassroots Solutions

The Barefoot Institute in Tilonia, Rajasthan, completes 50 years today. It was an initiative started by Bunker Roy in 1972 to integrate rural and urban knowledge and solve problems of livelihood and life quality in remote regions .

With the help of local communities, the campus has found success with, conserving energy, schooling, technology, communication, the empowerment of women, water conservation, livelihood ,and health. The campus is located in Ajmer district. Barefoot College says it follows Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and lifestyle . It has been visited by many known personalities like The Dalai Lama, President Abdul Kalam, Prince And Princess Of Wales, And The World Bank President.

Some of the Barefoot College’s successes have been:

 Solar: only fully electrified campus in rural India since 2000; Water: over 70 Bn. Ltrs. harvested, traditional water sources revived; Schools: since 1975, over 100,000 students educated from ‘Last Mile Rural Areas’; Barefoot College runs the first plastic waste free village in Rajasthan.
