Cleaning of sewers and septic tanks in the country is a risky job and workers risk their lives to clean septic and sewer tanks without safety equipment for a few rupees. Many employees also die due to security lapses.

Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar has told in the Rajya Sabha that 941 employees have died during the cleaning of sewers. That is, at least three employees died every day.
