Hyderabad: Facial Recognition Tech Raises Surveillance Concerns On

Hyderabad has long been one of the tech capitals of India like Bangalore, but now it seems that there isa negative use of its high-tech capabilities afoot. 

Over the past few years, international organizations have been keeping an eye on India and have expressed concerns about las seeking to limit or intrude into the privacy of citizens. The Indian government has been accused of trying to link Aadhar cards to other documents to infringe on the digital privacy of the people.

Now, the international rights body Amnesty International has expressed apprehensions about an extensive Facial Recognition project to be implemented in Indian cities, the fist being Hyderabad. It is feared that the right to privacy will come under attack. Therefore, the organization has launched a campaign ‘Ban The Scan’ (#BanTheScan)

Under this campaign, the organization released a report on Monday that says that there’s a Command and Control Centre being built in Telangana, with the capacity to simultaneously monitor and collect data from 6 lakh cameras.
