Delhi CM and AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal held a press conference in poll-bound Punjab today to talk about the need for reforms in the educationla system of Punjab. Kejiwal was accompanied by AAP MP Bhagwant Singh Mann. Here are some points from the press conference:

  • 24 lakh children study in Punjab Schools, their future is in darkness. There is nothing I the name of studies, there is not even a single teacher in many of these schools. Some schools where a single teacher is teaching up to 7 classes have still been labelled as “Smart Schools”
  • He cited the example of AAP improving schools in Delhi after its election in 2015, and said neither the Congress nor the BJP has been able to do this in the sates where they rule
  • He said that his party guarantees that they will bing a “revolution” in education to Punjab through working with teachers
  • He raised the issue of low salaries of teachers, and said that their pay was lower than the minimum wage of unskilled labourers in Delhi, i.e., ₹15,000.
  • Kejriwal also said that teachers have been constantly protesting for two demands: filling vacancies through exams and regularizing contract teachers, he “appealed” the Chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi to accept those demands, or his party would fulfil them when it comes to power.
  • In context of the financial situation of Punjab, he said that Congress leaders have been repeating that “Punjabs coffers are empty” but they should answer who made it empty. He said that “Kejriwal also knows how to fill coffers”
  • He also made a statement saying although there are 25 MLAs and 2 or 3 MPs of the Congress are in contact with him, he is not interested in the "trash" from other parties.
