Myanmar Coup: Suu Kyi Sentenced, Political Situation Tense

The political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, India’s neighbour to the east, continues to rage. Veteran civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung Suu Kyi (76), who has been a figurehead of the civilian government at odds with the military junta rule, has been imprisoned for four years by a military court, as additional punishment for charges she was already facing.

She has been sentenced for illegal possession of walkie-talkies and breaching coronavirus restrictions.

 Her civilian government was overthrown in in February 2021 and has since been leading a popular resistance under the banner National Unity Government (NUG). It has now ben replaced with the State Administration Council (SAC)
