NYT Claims Modi Govt Bought Pegasus Spyware As Centre Refuses To Clarify To SC!

The New York Times in its report 'The Battle For The World’s Most Powerful Cyberweapon’ claimed today that the Modi government bought the Pegasus spyware from Israel-based NSO as part of a $2 billion "defence deal" in the context of warming India and Israel ties.

The Centre has refused to specify to the Supreme Court whether it had acquired or deployed the Pegasus software citing "national interest" and the Supreme Court responded by constituting an Expert Committee in October 2021 while hearing a clutch of petitions alleging that the litigants were targets of snooping by the government. Media has qupted certain 'official sources' saying that the report is "baseless" although no reaction or statement has come from the government officially thus far.
