Rahul Gandhi held a press conference today on Wednesday after the Supreme Court's verdict in the Pegasus spyware case, in which it has constituted a three-member expert committee to review key aspects of the spyware’s use and deployment.

In the presser, he said that “Pegasus is an attempt to crush Indian democracy”. He noted the wide range of people in the ambit of the spyware’s alleged snooping activities. He called it “particularly nasty and subversive”, its purpose being “to frighten.. and blackmail people” and “not allowing democratic process to work” as stated by Mr Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi further said that if the data being collected by the spyware was being received by the Prime Minister or Home Minister, and if so then it constituted an “illegal act”, giving the example of Election Commission data.
