Priyanka Gandhi: Congress Has Put Women On Centre-Stage
Priyanka Gandhi, the general-secretary of the Congress party and the assumed Chief Minister face of the partyin the upcoming Uttar Pradesh polls, announced the first list of 125 candidates for the Assembly elections today, of which 50 are women.
Women empowerment is a major electoral plank of the Congress which is aiming to consolidate this important section of the population under its umbrella. It has also raised the issues of youth unemployment, dalit rights, farmer issues, and other “real issues of the people” as it says.
Among the candidates announced by Priyanka Gandhi is the mother of the gangrape survivor in Unnao, for which BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was awarded life imprisonment. She said in a virtual press interaction today that the Congress had succeeded in asking women into a mainstream political issue and that no party could now sideline them or their concerns.
