Facebook Becomes Meta: Expansion Or Damage Control?

Social media giant Facebook has followed through on its announcement of rebranding itself. The company wants to disassociate from its identity as a social media platform and instead wants to expand its field into the ‘meta verse’, i.e., an interconnected world of applications that are to be experienced outside the limited 2D space of devices. The company will conduct business under its new name from December 1.

Facebook has been investing in virtual and augmented reality technologies for quite some time. Though the parent company of many social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger has rebranded, users will see no change in either the name or usage of their regular Facebook accounts. The social media site ‘Facebook; is now another app of the Meta ecosystem.

This move comes at a time when Facebook is under heavy fire and scrutiny for being unable or unwilling to control toxicity and false information in societies. Critics say that Facebook owner and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has gone though with the rebranding as an effort to suppress these controversies and do damage-control for the company’s image.
