As COVID hits Jobs, India’s Female Labour Participation Rate Falls To 16.1%

India’s female labour participation rate fell to 16.1 percent during the July-September 2020 quarter. This is the lowest among the major economies. As per a government report, this is due to the impact of the pandemic and widening job crisis.

During the April-June 2020 quarter, the percentage of women in the labour force had fallen to a record low of 15.5 percent. During that time, India had imposed strict lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.

As per the World Bank estimates, India has one of the lowest female labour force participation rates in the world. From more than 26 percent in 2005, the India’s female labour participation rate fell to 20.3 in 2019. At the same time, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had 30.5 percent and 33.7 percent female labour participation respectively.
