‘Bulldozer Justice’ In Khargone: Shivraj Chouhan Defends Move, Mehbooba Mufti Slams ‘Silence Of Majority’

As the controversy escalates around bulldozing the homes of Muslims solely for being ‘accused’ of rioting during Ram Navami in Madhya Pradesh, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has stated: “shouldn’t bulldozers be used against troubling the poor?”. The chief minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, reacted to the incident by saying yesterday that “not even a PM or CM can demolish someone’s house without investigation”. Rajasthan Karauli had also seen inflamed communal tensions which led to rioting and the destruction and looting of Muslim shops and homes.

Referring to himself as “Mama ji” as he is known in the state, he said to ANI: “The houses of poor people were burnt in Khargone. They should not worry as 'Mama' will build their houses. We will recover from those who burnt their houses,”

Chouhan said that the violence in Khargone was done by criminal elements the poor. While his government is “soft as a flower” with the people, but when it comes to “goons and criminals, we will not leave them”, he said. It is notable that there has been no conviction or judicial order to attach properties or demolish them.

There was violence during Ram Navami last week when processions by Hindu groups, sometimes armed with swords, allegedly played provocative music and raised slogans which prompted stone pelting in Muslim communities. Clashes led to violence and the deployment of the Rapid Action Force. As yet, 24 cases have been registered on more than 250 people leading to 95 arrests.

The government has constituted a tribunal headed by retired judge Shivkumar Mishra to recover losses caused by the rioting.
