Calcutta HC Takes Suo Moto Cognisance In Birbhum Violence

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday took a suo moto cognisance of the incident of Birbhum violence which took part in the state of West Bengal.

On Tuesday March 22nd , at least 11 people were killed after a mob set their houses on fire in Rampurhat in West Bengal. The CPI(M) alleged the victim's houses were set ablaze to avenge the killing of Bhadu Sheikh, a TMC panchayat leader, on Monday. Sheikh was killed after crude bombs were hurled at him in Rampurhat.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj agreed to take suo moto cognisance of the matter and further averred that the Bench would hear the matter. Meanwhile, a PIL was also filed on Tuesday seeking an investigation by by either the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incident of Rampurhat violence.

West Bengal CM Magmata Banerjee will also be visiting the crime scene today and said that none of the culprits will be spared. She also accused the opposition of politicising the incident.
