Election Results: BJP Secures Majority With Dented Vote Share In UP, Leads In 4 States

Two Hours into counting BJP back in UP, Uttrakhand and Goa. AAP takes Punjab.

Early trends in the five states assembly elections show that the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party may retain Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa while in Punjab Aam Admi Party has made unassailable lead. In Manipur, BJP is leading but the counting of votes is slow.

In Uttar Pradesh the BJP had already consolidated leads in 220 constituencies while the winning number is 203. Most of the seats in western UP seem to be going to the BJP where the party was facing headwinds due to farmers agitation. In the last election BJP had won 326 seats in Uttar Pradesh to form the government. The party was losing 41 seats across the state but within comfortable majority.

In Punjab Aam Admi Party made huge gains to across the target of 59 seats to form the government. Most of the seats were at the loss of Congress party which was ruling the state and saw massive internal fighting.

In Uttarakhand the Bhartiya Janta Party was losing some seats but predicted to gain a simple majority. The Congress gained some seats but not enough to come anywhere near the half way mark. In Goa where BJP formed the government five years ago after splitting the Congress party maintained its lead in more than half the seats.

The TMC and AAP could not make significant gains.

In Manipur one third of the trends were still to emerge but the BJP was in a comfortable position and had a lead double that of congress.

The early trends show that the Congress party is losing both the states it held in Punjab and Manipur.
