‘Hanuman Chalisa Controversy’: Shiv Sena Holds Dharna Outside Ravi, Naveneet Rana House

The political atmosphere in Maharashtra is stirring up on the issue of playing ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ on loudspeakers in response to ‘azaan’ calls from mosques. This comes after Nashik Police Comissioner Deepak Pandey was transferred on April 21st after issuing a directive that banned the use of loudspeakers from playing Hanuman Chalisa 15 minutes before and after azaan to prevent law and order problems.

The Shiv Sena is holding demonstrations outside the house of independent MLA Ravi Rana and his wife, MP Navneet Rana, who had asked supporters to chant Hanuman Chalisa outside the house of Maharashtra CM and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. They broke barricades and entered the residence, with police asking the couple not to step outside.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut tweeted ‘Enough is Enough’ in an apparent show of strength, and said: “If you try to come to our residence, then we also have the right to answer in the same language. Don't give us threats of imposing President's Rule here”

The Maharashtra government has repeatedly been at odds with th Centre and two of its prominent ministers, Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik, have been arrested by the CBI and ED respectively.

Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil said that the Ravi and Navneet Rana sought to “spoil the atmosphere of the state” and that “they are doing this at the behest of somebody”. Security has been increased at the spot as the demonstrations are peaceful but vigorous.
