Harry Potter Book’s First Edition Smashes Auction Record At $471,000

A first edition of Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, the first of the seven-ovel series, has been auctioned for a whooping $471,000, which makes it not only the most expensive single sale in the book series’ history but also sets a record for the price of a 20th-century work of fiction.

The Harry Potter series began with this book which was published in 1997 by Bloomsbury. It has become a mega-franchise and a pop culture phenomenon since then, spawning a blockbuster movie series, amusement parks, merchandise, spin off books and movies, and more.

The film series has grossed a total of USD $7.8 billion in global box offices, while the books have sold 500 million copies in 80 languages. J.K. Rowling, the author, has a net worth of around £795 million according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2020.
