Imran Khan To Face No-Confidence Motion In Pakistan Parliament Today

The Imran Khan-led government of Pakistan, ruling since 2018, will face a no-confidence motion that may topple the government of the cricketer-turned-politician.

The Secretariat has issued a 15-point agenda for today’s legislative business which includes the no-confidence motion. The National Assembly of Pakistan has 342 seats, of which Imran Khan needs 172 to defeat the motion. His party, the PTI (Tehreek-e-Insaaf Pakistan), has 155 members in the parliament.

The motion was submitted in the National Assembly on March 8th, led by the country’s main opposition parties, the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PMLN) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Before the vote, Imran Khan made various public statements against the opposition, accusing them of corruption.

The opposition parties and around 24 rebel lawmakers from Imran Khan’s PTI (Tehreek-e-Insaaf Pakistan) blame his government for corruption and the prevailing economic crisis including rising inflation.

News reports from local media say that the PPP has a deal with the government-allied  Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) with 7 seats in the Assembly.

On March 25th, Pakistan’s Chief Justice ruled on a petition by the government seeking to bar dissident members of the PTI from voting against the party line. Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that to bar a lawmaker from voting during the no-confidence motion would be “insulting”.
