Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat. Rohit Sharma (19) and Ajinkya Rahane (18) were the only batsmen to reach double figures as India were all out for 78. This was their 7th lowest score in Tests.
James Anderson and Craig Overton took 3 wickets each for England while Ollie Robinson and Sam Curran took 2 wickets each.
At the end of Day 1, England were at 120 for no loss. Haseeb Hameed (60 not out) and Rory Burns (52 not out) remained at the crease as England took a lead of 42 runs.
